How do you communicate with God?

"Now Jesus was telling the disciples a parable to make the point that at all times they ought to pray and not give up and lose heart," -Luke 18:1

I have been a member at my church for almost two years and since I've joined my pastor was, is, and always will be (I believe) big on prayer. He always mentions something about prayer during a Sunday service or a Thursday evening Bible study. He likes to say, "how much time do you spend on your knees praying?" He understands how vital prayer is and wants his members to know the same. When I first joined my church I didn't understand how important prayer was. I actually wasn't really interested in it, I would pray sometimes, but it was the times when I needed God to clean up a mess I created. Other than those times, I really didn't pray. Oh and praying past 1 minute and 30 seconds was a no go for me. I didn't see the value in prayer, but then one day something shifted. I was seeking wise counsel and we started to discuss prayer, and in that moment my mindset on prayer began to change.

In Luke 18:1 we are instructed and reminded that we should always pray. Prayer must be important if we are instructed to pray at all times. Not sometimes, but at all times. A few years back I was in a class learning about prayer. The instructor of class on the first day asked us, "what is prayer?" As people began to answer this one answer stuck with me like glue, the answer was, "prayer is how we communicate with God." This simple answer exactly describes prayer. Prayer is not some deep forty five page dissertation, it's simple communication with God. Look at it in the natural, if you want to get to know a person, you have to talk or communicate with that person to get to know them. The same thing works with God. If you want to know more about who God is personally, you have to talk to him. Get to know your Father through prayer. Prayer is also defined in God's Word, Matthew 7:7-8 lets us know what prayer is. It says, "Ask and keep on asking and it will be given to you; seek and keep on seeking and you will find; knock and keep on knocking and the door will be opened to you.For everyone who keeps on asking receives, and he who keeps on seeking finds, and to him who keeps on knocking, it will be opened."

Prayer is a vital part of our relationship with God. Prayer is our intimate time with God, that time when it's just you and him. Prayer is how receive answers to our questions, it's also how we receive divine strategy or instruction about any situation. Prayer is a lifestyle. It's not a once a month or week thing to do, but it's how we should live our lives as Christians. We should always be praying. Prayer is life changing. Remember if want to know more about God, have some daily talks with Him. He's always available.
