In this passage of scripture Jesus was teaching on discipleship. The word disciple means student, learner, pupil, etc.. In Luke 14:26 Jesus is not telling us to literally "hate" our family members, friends, or our own life. The word "hate" in this passage means to prefer or love less. So, you could read this passage like this; "If any man come to me and not prefer Me over his own father, and mother, and wife, and children, yea and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple."
Jesus wants us to be His students. He has so many things He wants to reveal to us. Below I listed some key points and benefits of being a disciple. I also listed some scripture references that you can read on your own time.
Here is a list of key points on being a disciple (student) for Christ:
- Jesus is the teacher. -Matthew 11:29
- If we are not willing to give up everything, we can not be a disciple. -Luke 14:26
- Jesus is not telling us to "hate" our family and friends. He is telling us to prefer and love Him over them.
- Not everyone is willing to make the choice to become a disciple.
- Being a disciple will cost you something. (Family, friends, job, etc.....) - Luke 14:28-33
Here is a list of benefits of being a disciple (student) for Christ:
- We learn of his ways. -Psalms 32:8
- Jesus reveals himself to His disciples. - 1 Corinthians 2:9-14,16
- We know & reap the promises of God. -2 Peter 1:1-4
- We receive rewards. -Hebrews 11:6
God wants us to become disciples for Christ. In being a disciple for Christ we learn of his ways, we find out WHO WE ARE in Him, and we can minister to others. I encourage you to seriously think about where you are in life and can you benefit in becoming a disciple or being a better one (Count the cost)? Becoming a disciple is a choice, what choice will you choose?
